OVERVIEW
At StrongArm Tech, we set out to solve a major problem in the warehouse industry: how to keep workers safe while doing physically demanding jobs. These workers, who lift heavy boxes, move quickly, and endure long shifts, face the same physical strain as professional athletes. That’s why we call them “Industrial Athletes.”
To support them, StrongArm created a wearable sensor paired with a smart algorithm that tracks how they move throughout the day. Every time someone bends, twists, or tilts in a way that could lead to injury—especially back pain—the sensor picks it up. After each shift, the worker receives a Safety Score that reflects how safely they moved.
But it wasn’t just for the workers. StrongArm also developed an online dashboard for supervisors, giving them real-time visibility into safety risks on the floor. Together, the sensor, the Safety Score, and the dashboard became a powerful tool to help prevent injuries, improve movement habits, and protect the health of every Industrial Athlete on the job.

THE CHALLENGE
#1 Low Athlete Engagement
- Many customers didn’t require Athletes (workers) to wear the sensor.
#2 Low Supervisor Dashboard Usage
- Supervisors were too busy and focused on productivity, not safety data.
BUSINESS GOAL
Improve Customer Retention
- By increasing regular engagement with both the sensor and dashboard

CUSTOMER RESEARCH & ANALYSIS
We started by listening—speaking directly with clients, gathering feedback from our customer success team, and studying how other apps present complex data. Through this research, our UX and product teams identified the two key personas at the heart of the StrongArm experience — 1) Athletes and 2) Supervisors.
From there, we created their daily journey map—pinpointing exactly when and how they interact with the sensor and the dashboard. This allowed us to clearly see where the experience was falling short and where we had the biggest opportunities to make their interaction with StrongArm smoother, easier, and more effective.

IDEATION & DESIGN EXPERIMENTS
During our brainstorming sessions, one key insight kept coming up: supervisors needed a simple way to focus on each individual worker’s safety data. That’s when the idea of a dedicated Athlete page took shape.
This page would give supervisors a clear view of an Athlete’s Safety Scores, movement patterns, and trends over time. More importantly, it became a tool for meaningful conversations—allowing supervisors to sit down with an Athlete, review their scores together, discuss how to improve, and even see how their performance compares to their peers.
The challenge part was nailing down a design that was clear, easy-to-scan, and gave only the priority information a supervisor would need to show his Athlete how to improve their data and weekly trends.

USER TESTING & PARTICIPATORY REVISIONS
User testing showed us the Safety Score numbers weren’t clear on their own. So, together with clients, we sketched ideas and landed on a meter-style design. This made it instantly easier to visually understand what the numbers actually meant at a glance.

DESIGN EXPERIMENTS & REFINEMENT
After several rounds of refinement, we landed on a clean, easy-to-scan visualization of Safety Scores, including Bend, Tilt, and Twist data. It gives supervisors everything they need to quickly coach an Athlete on safe movement, plus a 60-second video with simple steps to on how to improve..

SOLUTION
We were proud to launch a clean, desktop and mobile-friendly Athlete Profile page, making it easy for supervisors to review scores with Athletes on the go. By selecting an Athlete from the list, they could instantly access their data. While the main list screen still had the slightly older design, updating it to the new design system to match the new look was already planned as the next step. That way we could launch the new feature out for our clients faster.

RESULTS
-
Weekly logins increased significantly, as shown by Pendo analytics.
-
The Athlete Profile became the 3rd most visited page in the dashboard.
-
Supervisor-to-Athlete safety coaching sessions increased dramatically, showing real impact on engagement and behavior change.
